The Puako – Waialea area is one of the most unique oceanfront enclaves in the State of Hawaii. Located midway between the Mauna Lani Resort and the Mauna Kea Resort, Puako Beach Drive is a 2 mile long cul de sac road with approximately 170 properties, half of which are oceanfront and the other half across the street from the ocean. There are public access right-of-ways all along the road providing beach access to everyone.
Until the mid to late 40’s, Puako was accessible only by boat or by walking trail. During WW II, the roadway was built and shortly after the war, the Territory of Hawaii began auctioning the lots to local residents for between $300 to $1,000.
Puako has great appeal for people wanting to live right on or close to the ocean in a small neighborhood enclave close to two major resorts; there are few places in Hawaii where one can live so close to the ocean.
